Microsoft Azure Quantum
About Microsoft Azure Quantum
Microsoft Azure Quantum
In February 2025, Microsoft unveiled its Majorana-1 chip, a semiconductor-based device that leverages topological qubits, marking a fundamental shift toward scalable quantum computing. The topological qubit is small enough to fit into a hand but powerful enough to be integrated into quantum computers deployed inside Azure data centers. In February 2024, DARPA selected Microsoft Azure Quantum to continue developing a utility-scale quantum computer based on topological qubits, with the next phase focusing on designing a prototype topological quantum computer. In June 2025, a Microsoft Quantum team detailed a novel approach to topological error correction, exploring the application of four-dimensional geometric codes to enhance performance and reduce resource requirements for building practical, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Microsoft and Atom Computing also demonstrated record-breaking entanglement with 24 logical qubits, and Microsoft partnered with Quantinuum to achieve 800x error reduction in logical qubits.
