The Quantum Data Centre of the Future
An ORCA-led consortium that designed and demonstrated how a quantum computer could sit inside a data centre alongside classical systems.
Role: Partner
Themes: Computing, Communications, Networks
Company · London
BP comes to quantum technology as an energy-sector end user rather than a developer. It joined the IBM Quantum Network as an industry partner in February 2021, naming clay build-up in hydrocarbon wells, wind farm fluid dynamics and robotic inspection as problems to explore. In the UK it was an end-user participant in two Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund consortia: Toshiba's AQuaSec project on quantum-safe communications (2018 to 2021) and ORCA Computing's Quantum Data Centre of the Future (2022 to 2025). In June 2026 it was listed among the members of DSIT's new Quantum Growth Alliance.
BP is a London company. It is a partner in 3 UK projects: The Quantum Data Centre of the Future, QCS and AQuaSeC.

QCS
The phase 2 national hub for quantum computing and simulation, led by the University of Oxford. It ran from 2019 to 2024.
Role: Partner
Funding: £27.3m
Themes: Computing, Software and algorithms
AQuaSeC
A Toshiba-led consortium that built prototype quantum-safe communication systems. It combined quantum key distribution with quantum-resistant algorithms.
