MARCONI: Modular UK QKD receivers for Quantum Internet
MARCONI
A RedWave Labs-led consortium building two UK-made receiver modules for entanglement-based quantum key distribution.
Role: Partner
Funding: £1.5m
Themes: Communications, Networks
Start-up · Sheffield
Built on antimonide semiconductor research at the University of Sheffield, Phlux makes Aura infrared avalanche photodiodes for 1550 nm light that it says are up to 12 times more sensitive than comparable APDs. Most of its market is lidar, range finding and fibre sensing, but it brought its detectors to MARCONI, a £1.49m Innovate UK project led by RedWave Labs from June 2024 to March 2026 to build two UK-made receivers for quantum key distribution. Phlux's share of that grant was about £227,000. In April 2025 it raised a £9m Series A led by BGF.
Phlux Technology, based in Sheffield, is a start-up. It is a partner in 1 UK project: MARCONI. Profiled here: Ben White (Co-Founder and CEO).
