Exeter's quantum work centres on Professor Janet Anders's Quantum Non-Equilibrium Group in Physics and Astronomy. In February 2026 the university said it would lead the UK side of a five-year project with Nottingham, King's College London and three Japanese universities on noise-resistant atom and photon sensors, with £1.5m from UKRI for the UK team. A smaller £150,000 project with the University of Queensland, Quantum Link Verification, aims by 2027 to prototype a way of spotting fibre-optic eavesdroppers using single photons. Exeter physicist Jacopo Bertolotti also led a work package on imaging through scattering media in phase 2 of the QuantIC imaging hub.
University of Exeter is a university in Exeter with one quantum project in this directory. It is a partner in 1 UK project: QuantIC.

Berry’s phase, typically linked to complex-valued quantum states, has now been demonstrated within systems constrained to real numbers. A geometric phase equal to π was observed, achieved by manipulating the topology of metric graphs. This finding opens new avenues for exploring topological effects

Partial Quantisation of Non-Hermitian Berry Phases in Time-Varying Media Until now, topological properties in time-varying media remained largely theoretical, lacking direct experimental verification. This work demonstrates a measurable quantisation of the real part of the Berry phase, offering an a
