The British bank's Chief Technology Office has studied quantum computing since 2017, with distinguished engineer Lee Braine in charge of the research. Its first experiment, run on IBM quantum processors and posted in October 2019, adapted variational algorithms to optimise the settlement of batches of securities transactions; Barclays concluded small data sets were manageable but real-world sizes were years off. It later took the same settlement problem to Microsoft Research's optical Analog Iterative Machine, a collaboration reported in June 2023. On security, it sits on Europol's Quantum Safe Financial Forum for moving banks to post-quantum cryptography.

Barclays is a London company working on quantum finance, post quantum cryptography and optimisation, founded in 1690. It is not yet linked to a UK project in this directory.
