The University of Sussex's Centre for Quantum Technologies, on its campus near Brighton, has groups working on ion-trap processors, ion-photon interfaces, quantum simulators, superconducting circuits and quantum-enhanced metrology. Its best-known spin-out, Universal Quantum, was founded in 2018 and led a £7.5m Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund consortium, with Sussex and Rolls-Royce among the partners, to build an error-correcting trapped-ion machine. Since September 2024 Sussex has led, with Bristol, a £24m EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Information Science and Technologies, backed by the NQCC, NPL, BT and PsiQuantum. It was also a partner in the earlier Quantum Computing and Simulation and Sensors and Timing hubs.
