Project data last updated 11 October 2026
The University of Glasgow unveiled the centre on 29 September 2021 at the SPIE Photonex conference. It is directed by Professor Miles Padgett.
The centre draws on the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre and its commercial arm, Kelvin Nanotechnology, which make components for quantum technologies. At launch the university said its researchers worked with more than 50 industrial partners. A £850,000 scholarship fund was set up with SPIE.

Experimental quantum key distribution now detects eavesdropping on 15% of shared qubits without discarding any key material. This contrasts with conventional methods, which necessitate revealing and losing key bits to verify security. Embedding cryptographic operations within a photonic quantum swit
