Optical microcavities first built for quantum computing research at Oxford sit at the heart of Mode Labs' chemical sensors, which target water quality. Its first products monitor total phosphorus and ammonia in rivers, a market shaped by the Environment Act 2021, and the company says they need a thousandth of the reagent and a four-hundredth of the power of existing kit. Spun out of Oxford's chemistry and materials departments, it closed a £3m round in 2025 with Oxford Science Enterprises as lead investor. In 2026 Ofwat's Water Discovery Challenge named it one of 20 finalists, with £100,000 to trial its CERES monitoring platform.
